The Hewitt Creative Arts Department provides a rich and varied curriculum in the visual and performing arts for students in all three divisions. Through participation in a vibrant array of artistic experiences – individual tutorials, classes, rehearsals, dramatic productions, concerts and exhibits – Hewitt girls are offered myriad opportunities to deepen their understanding and appreciation of the arts and to explore and nurture their own creative abilities and talents. The Hewitt Arts faculty make every effort to incorporate the exhibits and performances of New York City’s great cultural institutions.
Students in the Lower School study music and art every year. Beginning in the Middle School, girls participate in a comprehensive rotation in the arts, including ceramics, drama, music, photography, studio art, and textiles, culminating in the ninth grade capstone course, New York Art and Music World. After a fifth grade introduction to chorus and handbells, Middle School girls then choose a performing elective from among chorus, dance, handbells, and public speaking. The Upper School program offers girls the opportunity to pursue these disciplines at the highest level, including participation in the award-winning Chamber Choir, Advanced Handbell Choir or Jazz Choir, as well as advanced courses and independent study in ceramics, drama, photography, and studio art. Additional electives include Film Studies, History of Jazz, History and Theory of Western Music, and Studies in Contemporary Art.
In addition to being gifted and dedicated teachers, all faculty in the Hewitt Creative Arts Department are themselves practicing professional artists, and they inspire in their students the ability and desire to share the products of their artistic efforts with the community through frequent concerts, plays and musicals, and art exhibits.
