05/15/2013 – SCHOOL was out, and Jack Kaufmann, who teaches 8th and 9th grade Latin at the elite Hewitt School in Manhattan, was on his way to catch the train home to Westchester. That’s hardly surprising, except that Mr. Kaufmann is 71 years old and has been teaching for only the last three years. For much of the last 32 years, the dapper, silver-haired Mr. Kaufmann was a partner at the law firm Dewey Ballantine. 04/29/2013 – New York City has recently introduced a number of innovative measures, some of which have evoked little enthusiasm (such as banning the sale of oversized sugary sodas), while others have proved to be more popular (such as the addition of bicycle lanes). I want to draw attention to an innovative measure that I’d like to see passed in my city, that is increasingly receiving attention and momentum across the country because of its enormous environmental impact – the banning or taxing of single use disposable plastic bags.

Hewitt’s 2012 Strategic Plan states, “We will venture beyond the familiar to interact with our local and global communities and educate our students to be global investigators and learners with open minds and open hearts.”

Last week Hewitt students took part in the first annual March on March 8 with UN Women for Peace to support an end to domestic violence worldwide. Mrs. Ban Soon-taek, Patron of UN Women for Peace said in her opening remarks, “Every women and girl has the right to live free from violence and threats. It may seem impossible to end all attacks on women and girls but when I look at you I know it is possible. This is a movement whose time has come.”

Sofia P. ’15 and Paloma S. ’16 represented Hewitt at the march and were able to secure interviews with Christy Turlington, Susan Sarandon, and Kelly Rutherford, three of the high profile speakers/activists at the march. Click the link below to watch their interview.

The cover of Hewitt’s view book reads “What does Hewitt prepare a girl to be?” We answered it by sharing our belief that through a Hewitt education each girl will be “the architect of her own destiny.”

This concept manifests itself in unique ways for each student. This semester the kindergarten girls are working together in small groups to build structures over a period of several days that have a distinct plan. First, the girls built a model of the JFK airport.

Next, they worked on a smaller structure, but expanded their design in height.

Most recently, the girls have started to create a hotel. Take a look:

Block building requires brainstorming, planning, problem-solving and collaborating. It sets the foundation for engineering as the girls develop an intuitive understanding of mathematical concepts such as number sense and proportion.

This past weekend, Hewitt hosted over 200 students for the first ever Ban the Bag conference. Hewitt’s student-run Earth Committee, in conjunction with the Green Schools Alliance, is spearheading the campaign to convince City Council to ban, or impose a fee on, single-use disposable plastic bags. “We [New York City] should be a leader in environmental efforts and we are not. We are quite far behind on this issue,” said Jocelyn G. ’13, Co-President of Hewitt’s Earth Committee.

The conference featured a screening of the documentary Bag It, followed by a student-moderated panel of experts who have experience with bag-banning initiatives including the following:

Brad Lander-City Council Member, representing Brooklyn’s 39th District

Jennie Romer- Founder and Director of plasticbaglaws.org and instrumental in banning the bag in San Francisco

Ron Gonen- Mayor Bloomberg’s newly appointed Deputy Commissioner for Recycling and Sustainability and founder of Recyclebank

Stiv Wilson- Communications and Policy Director of the 5 Gyres Institute

Eric Goldstein- New York City Environment Director of the Natural Resources Defense Council

Maite Quinn- Business Development and Marketing Manager of SIMS Municipal Recycling (handles NYC solid waste and recycling)

Micah Kellner- New York State Assemblyman who sits on the NY Committee on Environmental Conservation

Click the link below to see a NBC News clip of Hewitt students, and conference organizers, Jocelyn G. ’13 and Caroline H. ‘ 14, discuss the importance of this initiative.

Hewitt students are working on drafting a Ban the Bag petition and, when legislation is introduced, will attend City Council meetings to advocate for a greater commitment towards environmental sustainability. Hewitt is a Green Schools Alliance founding member and winner of the 2012 Fall Green Cup Recycle Challenge.
