Hewitt Service In Action

The Hewitt School’s mission empowers girls to lead lives of consequence with character, compassion, and conviction. Service in Action builds upon our mission and challenges girls to take action as leaders both locally and globally. Through integrated learning, social action, service learning, and volunteer work, girls learn to research, advocate, and act for the betterment of their community and the world.

Service learning is an integral part of our school’s academic curriculum and community action is incorporated into school days and throughout the calendar year. As part of their education at Hewitt, the girls become socially aware members of local and global communities. All students at Hewitt participate in community action, beginning in kindergarten and continuing on until graduation. Each grade level works with a local, national or international organization. Students work together with faculty to cultivate a partnership that is developmentally appropriate and meaningful for the girls.

History and Initiatives

The Student Service Board was founded in 2012 by students in the Upper School with the purpose of establishing a student-driven service program at Hewitt. The representative members from grades 8 – 12, along with leaders in the senior class, lead our School’s service efforts and define the requirements and purpose of service in our school. In one of their first acts as a group, the Student Service Board chose to make a commitment to the relief agency AmeriCares. The students felt it was essential to have a partner in times of disaster relief so that funds could be collected quickly and used carefully by a reputable organization. The students continue to evaluate and assess our partner organizations each year. The students work together as global citizens to make stronger connections at school and in the world. Through drives, classroom conversations, and guest speakers the Student Service Board seeks to educate all constituents of our community about the organizations we support as a school.

Partner Organizations

All students participate in community action at Hewitt and across the tri-state area. Some of our partner organizations include the Ronald McDonald House of New York, Project Cicero, Memorial Sloan Kettering Hospital, KidFlicks, UNICEF, the New York Common Pantry, The Bowery Mission, Million Trees NYC, AmeriCares, Operation Gratitude, Project Sunshine, Gods Love We Deliver, Meals on Wheels, Health Advocates for Older People, Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge, and the NYC Food Bank. Through their participation in multiple service initiatives Hewitt students have once again proven themselves to be “thinkers, learners, and doers” in ways that will affect the greater community.
