The expertise of a first-rate faculty and a curriculum dedicated to a rich artistic experience means that in every class and in every grade, each Hewitt student knows how to express herself effectively and creatively. Every creative arts teacher is a working professional with strong ties to the New York City artistic community and is able to arrange field trips and guest artists to enrich the students' experiences.
Appreciation comes first
The Lower School program teaches children artistic and musical expression in classes that also foster appreciation for the art and music of others. Age-appropriate challenges in a supportive environment encourage self-reliance, creative problem solving, imagination and collaboration.
Development comes next
Middle School creative arts includes drama, music and studio art. As students' skills develop, they are introduced to theater and voice, music and song, and drawing and sculpture. They showcase these talents in a musical production that has become the highlight of the year.
Explore the resources of the city
In the Upper School, art, music, drama, dance and photography are offered as introductory, intermediate and advanced level classes. With artists and institutions abounding in New York City, course work at the Upper School level is rich and immediate. And with many school photography, news and literary publications, students have a supportive outlet for their work. To display their creativity to the rest of the school, a play and musical show have become centerpieces of the year for Upper School students.
