I shared the following message with Hewitt's faculty and staff on the morning of spring conferences.
When I joined the Hewitt community three years ago, I never anticipated that conference day would become one of my favorite days of the school year. Yet it is. Why? It is because all day long, I bear witness in our two lobbies to a steady stream of parents and students, coming and going, full of anticipation, pride, determination, and hope for the future.
As you think about what you hope to accomplish today, I leave you with the words of the late educator Rita Pierson: "Every child deserves a champion–an adult who will never give up on them, who understands the power of connection and insists that they become the best that they can possibly be." If you have not seen Rita's eight-minute TED Talk I recommend it to you. The context in which Rita spent her 40-year career as an educator is in many ways very different from ours at Hewitt–but her central message about the transformative power of the relationship between teacher and student applies to each and every one of us, on this day and every day.
On this very special day, I thank you for everything that you do to connect with and inspire our students and partner with their parents and guardians. I am proud to be a member of this community and proud to call you colleagues.
