Hewitt Hawks Fall 2022 Athletics Recap
Walter Rodriguez, Interim Director of Athletics

The Hewitt Hawks kicked off the 2022 school year with a fantastic fall season. We had an intense two-week preseason before diving into competitions and making significant progress throughout the fall. Over the course of the season, our middle and upper school athletes and coaches focused on individual skill development while demonstrating their positivity, creativity, resiliency, and dedication.

Hewitt Varsity Tennis
As a team, Hawks varsity tennis demonstrated consistent, inspired dedication throughout the season. Their hard work paid off as they were ranked among the top five teams in the Athletic Association of Independent Schools (AAIS) conference, with intense match play in and out of the conference. The Hawks competed in the AAIS post-season tournament as the fifth seed, where they defeated Chapin, the fourth seed team, in the quarterfinals. They then played in the semifinals, competing against Spence in a close match.

The Hawks had three athletes qualify for the New York State Association of Independent Schools (NYSAIS) Postseason Tournament including one doubles team and the defending singles NYSAIS Champion. Hewitt’s doubles team competed fiercely, falling to Dalton in a nail-biting tie-breaker. A Hewitt junior displayed her power and precision on the court as she has done all season, taking the NYSAIS Singles Championship for the second year in a row. Her undefeated record of 28-0 throughout the 2021 and 2022 seasons is a testament to her dominance on the court.

Hewitt Varsity Cross Country
“Runners, set! Go!” Cross country Hawks soared throughout the hills of Van Cortlandt Park all season. Our athletes demonstrated grit and perseverance, racing weekly through one of the most challenging courses in the country. Hewitt was represented well at the AAIS Cross Country Championships with two Hawks scoring medals — one student placed 2nd overall and another ranked 15th. The team competed at the NYSAIS Cross Country Championships, led by one junior who came in an impressive 3rd place out of 170 NYSAIS runners.

Our Hawks varsity cross country captain led the team with all-time, school record setting performances. She now holds Hewitt records for the 4000-meter and 5000-meter races and clocked in at 15:55, the 18th fastest all-time record, at the AAIS Cross Country Championships 4k race.

Hewitt Varsity Soccer
Varsity soccer athletes displayed grit and courage this fall season. Led by our junior and senior captains, the Hawks embodied what it means to be game changers. No matter the outcome of the games, they kept high team morale and never stopped working hard. The Hawks honed in on improving their soccer skills and team play, and have set up a strong base for next fall. These athletes look forward to working on their soccer skills throughout the off-season to come back even stronger in fall 2023!

Hewitt Varsity Volleyball
The Hawks varsity volleyball team had a very competitive fall season. Faced with steep competition, the team worked through challenges and came out stronger than ever. For the first time in Hewitt varsity volleyball program history, our Hawks qualified for the AAIS postseason! They played with grit and toughness, displaying exceptional teamwork and determination all season. It was rewarding to see these athletes, who were revered and praised by other coaches and teams in the AAIS league, represent Hewitt with tremendous sportswomanship.

Hewitt Junior Varsity Volleyball
The Hawks J.V. volleyball team stayed competitive all season, fighting through some close games! The team worked hard, played together, and qualified for the AAIS postseason! Our young volleyball Hawks have created a bright future for the program and we look forward to watching them continue to grow as athletes next season.

Congratulations to all the athletes who competed and demonstrated leadership this season! And a special thanks to the many Hawks fans who cheered these teams on to victory and brought their Hewitt pride to the field, track, and court this fall. Go Hawks!
