Multicultural Day: Celebrating Hewitt’s Community of Belonging
Alia Carponter-Walker, Director of Institutional Equity and Global Partnerships

One of our most joyful and meaningful community events, Hewitt’s annual Multicultural Day brings together K-12 students, families, faculty, and staff to celebrate the identities that make up the Hewitt community and deepen their understanding of cultures from around the world.

We are grateful to our student leaders, dedicated faculty and staff, and especially our family volunteers, whose time, care, and generosity made this day so memorable. Highlights from our 2026 Multicultural Day included:

A powerful panel discussion focused on intersectionality and how multiple aspects of our identity — such as race, culture, religion, and language — shape our individual perspectives and lived experiences. Through this conversation, students were encouraged to reflect on their own identities while building empathy, curiosity, and above all, respect for one another.

Student-led mini workshops celebrated the languages, histories, music, fashion, dances, and cultural traditions of different countries from around the globe. In these immersive and interactive spaces, high schoolers acted as both teachers and learners, sharing elements of their own cultures and exploring those of their peers.

Our international food festival featured an incredible array of food stations representing more than 20 countries and cultures. Thanks to the generosity of parent and guardian volunteers, we enjoyed delicacies including Chinese bao buns, Jamaican curry, pulled pork sliders from the American South, Tibetan momos, tres leches cake from the Dominican Republic, and Hungarian chicken paprikash made by our very own Head of School Dr. Jennifer Zaccara!

As Bella R. ’26 reflected, “I’ve always loved learning about different cultures and languages, and being in a space where my peers showcased elements of their identity was really powerful and allowed me to learn more about my friends.”

Katelynn M. ’27 shared, “I think that it’s important to have Multicultural Day, and especially to include lower schoolers, because it shines a light on all of the different cultures that might be underrepresented in our world. I loved the food, interacting with all of the students at Hewitt, and having a time where we all come together as a full community.”

Multicultural Day is a powerful reminder of the strength and beauty of our diverse Hewitt community. Through shared experiences, storytelling, and celebration, the day created space for students to honor their identities, learn from one another, and build a deeper sense of belonging both inside and outside of the Hewitt schoolhouse.
