Hewitt News

We are thrilled to announce that Loris N. Adams will be Hewitt’s next director of equity and community life, effective July 1, 2020. After a highly competitive search process that concluded last month with on-campus full day interviews, classroom visits, and a thorough review of feedback submitted by faculty, staff, families, and the Search Committee, we are delighted to have recruited to Hewitt a highly accomplished and nationally respected independent school educator and practitioner in the field of diversity, equity, and inclusion.

As our search process progressed and we acquainted ourselves with Loris’ strong track record of equity and inclusion work in independent schools; her genuinely warm and compassionate way of connecting with and engaging a diverse range of individuals; her deep listening skills and keen emotional intelligence; her sense of humor; and her deep knowledge of the programs and pace necessary to build community we realized that in Loris we had found our next director of equity and community life at Hewitt.

Currently serving as director of community and equity affairs at St. Mark’s School, a boarding school for grades 9-12 in Southborough, MA, Loris previously worked as a lower school dean and chaplain at Trinity Episcopal School in Charlotte, North Carolina. She is also a principal consultant with The Glasgow Group, a consortium of consultants who provide skills, tools, and experiences through a lens of diversity, equity, and inclusion to enhance and deepen schools’, organizations’, and individuals’ capacity for transformation. A regular presenter at conferences, including the National Association of Independent Schools (NAIS) People of Color Conference and the North Carolina Association of Independent Schools (NCAIS), Loris currently serves on the faculty of the NAIS Student Diversity Leadership Conference and as an advisory board member for Enquiry Evaluation as well as DiversityIS, and has participated in the National Diversity Practitioners Institute, the Kingswood Oxford Institute for Educators of Colors, and the NAIS Diversity Leadership Institute.

Loris brings to Hewitt an impressive breadth of knowledge and deep, relevant experience that makes her exceptionally prepared to lead Hewitt’s diversity, equity and inclusivity efforts. Over the last decade she has been working to help students and families of all backgrounds succeed in independent schools. She specializes in youth program creation and engagement, staff diversity training, and curriculum development with a focus on multicultural sensitivities, intersectionality, conflict resolution, and multifaith community building. Loris eagerly looks forward to joining the Hewitt community next year to work alongside our wonderful community of teachers, families, students, and alumnae.

In the coming months, Head of School Dr. Tara Christie Kinsey looks forward to working with Loris and Director of Diversity and Inclusivity Jacqueline Nelson to develop a transition plan in order to ensure the continuation of mission-aligned work with our community. We are extraordinarily grateful to the Search Committee members for the significant time, energy, and thought they devoted to this process and to Partner Sherry Coleman and Associate Staci Williams Seeley at Storbeck/Pimentel & Associates for the work they and their colleagues did to recruit such a strong pool of highly qualified candidates. Finally, we extend our thanks to Hewitt’s community of parents and guardians, faculty, and staff for their engagement throughout our search and for their insightful questions and feedback, which have demonstrated their investment in our school and its future.

Please join us in congratulating and warmly welcoming Loris to Hewitt as our next director of equity and community life!
